Each Friday Annie Schiffmann hosts What I Learned This Week an Instagram Live show to find out what artists have learned about promoting their work on social media. This week: special guest award-winning filmmaker Lauren Chiten talks about building your audience for easy distribution and roping your audience in early on Facebook Live.
Capture - and Hold - Your Audience’s Attention
Facebook Live is an excellent way to connect with your audience. The problem is the first few minutes of the broadcast can be a make or break moment as to whether or not your audience watches you. And those are the moments that are often the rockiest. We cracked the code to getting more people to engage and watch right off the bat.
Using the methodology in Building a Storybrand we have been able to create a good hook at the beginning of our clients’ FB Lives to grab the audience’s attention and keep it without those first few minutes of muttering around.
The secret? Focusing on the problem you’re going to solve and who that problem affects.
Laurel Chiten on building an audience
When Laurel Chiten of Blind Dog Films was ready to distribute her newest release Just One Drop she had a built in audience that was ready to distribute it for her. How did this happen? She was building her audience during the entire filmmaking process and checking in with them and by the time the film was ready, her rabid fans were happy to spread the word about it. Now she is sharing with other filmmakers how they can market their films in today’s world. She mentions the importance of one to one communications through channels like Facebook Groups.
Another key takeaway - you made your film for your audience and they want to see it. So be proud to share your work! As we like to say at Downstage Media: your are deserves to be seen!
