What Is a StoryBrand Certified Guide? (And Why the Title Changed. And Then Changed Back)

Update (2026): StoryBrand briefly changed the title from StoryBrand Certified Guide to StoryBrand Certified Coach and has since returned to StoryBrand Certified Guide. This post has been updated to reflect that change and what it means for you.

If you’ve noticed some confusion around the title StoryBrand Certified Guide versus StoryBrand Certified Coach, you’re not imagining it.

For a period of time, StoryBrand did shift the title from “Guide” to “Coach.” It was tied to a broader initiative to unify programs under the CoachBuilder umbrella.

And then… it changed back.

Donald Miller later addressed this directly to us Guides, acknowledging that the shift created confusion across the company and the community. The roles became less clear. The focus got diluted. So the decision was made to return to the original “Guide” title.

Hearing Donald Miller share the decision to return to “StoryBrand Certified Guide” in real time.

So if you’ve seen both terms used, you’re not wrong. You’re just seeing how brand that’s built itself on clarity can actually have some confusion during its evolution.

I’ve been a StoryBrand Certified Guide since 2021, and I’ve worked with hundreds of clients across industries and trained over 50 Certified Guides. I’ve seen firsthand how powerful the framework is when it’s applied well and how quickly things fall apart when it’s not.

And while we’re on the topic of name changes, a quick personal note.

I know what it’s like.

I was originally Annie Figenshu. Then I changed my name to Annie Schiffmann when I got married. And in 2025, I changed it back to Annie Figenshu since I’m no longer married.

In a lot of ways, StoryBrand’s return to “Guide” feels similar. Not a reset for the sake of it, but a move back to what actually fits.

What Is a StoryBrand Certified Guide?

Donald Miller explains what a Certified StoryBrand Guide can do for you.

Back in 2021 after completing my week-long training on the StoryBrand framework and sales funnels.

StoryBrand Guides — I mean StoryBrand Coaches, no, I mean StoryBrand Guides — are trained by Donald Miller, Dr. J.J. Peterson, and the StoryBrand team in the StoryBrand messaging framework. We're certified to help business owners clarify what they do and say it in a way that actually connects with customers.

That training is hands-on. We work on imaginary and actual brands - including our own.

Since 2021, I’ve applied the framework across websites, email campaigns, webinars, social content, sales funnels—even a Shark Tank pitch.

I’ve also had the opportunity to help teach the framework—both to clients and to other Guides.

I’ve facilitated the StoryBrand Marketing Livestream half a dozen times, coaching business owners live as they build their BrandScripts. I’ve also worked behind the scenes training and onboarding new Certified Guides, which means I know this framework inside and out—and how to apply it in real-world, results-driven ways.

And when you work with Downstage Media, you’re not just getting me.

I collaborate with a team of trusted subcontractors—Holly Fisher, Charity Keller, and Jennifer Barden—all of whom are StoryBrand Certified as well. Whether I’m leading the work or assembling the right team to support it, your message is in expert hands.

From StoryBrand Certified Guide to StoryBrand Certified Coach And Then Back.

StoryBrand Certified Guides are trained by Donald Miller, J.J. Peterson, and the StoryBrand team in the StoryBrand messaging framework. For a period of time, this role was referred to as “Certified Coach,” but the training and the work itself have remained consistent.

At its core, the role is simple: help you clarify what you do and say it in a way that actually connects with customers.

That training last days and in it we work on real businesses, including our own, so we’re applying the framework as we’re learning it.

I’ve been a StoryBrand Certified Guide since 2021, and I’ve applied the framework across websites, email campaigns, webinars, social content, sales funnels, even a Shark Tank pitch.

I’ve also had the opportunity to help teach the framework, both to clients and to other Certified Guides.

I’ve facilitated the StoryBrand Marketing Livestream multiple times, coaching business owners live on camera as they build their BrandScripts. Behind the scenes, I’ve helped train and onboard new Certified Guides, which means I don’t just understand the framework. I understand how to make it work in real-world, results-driven ways.

And when you work with Downstage Media, you’re not just getting me.

I collaborate with a team of trusted subcontractors, all of whom are StoryBrand Certified as well. Whether I’m leading the work or assembling the right team to support it, your message is in expert hands.

What Working with Annie Figenshu and Downstage Media Looks Like

Annie Figenshu has been an incredible partner in our mission—not only through her work with clients, but through her role in training and supporting other Guides in our program.
— Dr. J.J. Peterson, Head of StoryBrand

I’ve worked with everyone from solopreneurs to multimillion-dollar companies. And no matter the size or scope, the questions are almost always the same:

  • What should I say?

  • Where should I say it?

  • How do I know it’s working?

That’s where a StoryBrand Certified Guide comes in.

Here’s how I support clients, depending on what you need:

BrandScript Development

If your message isn’t clear yet, this is where we start. We build a StoryBrand BrandScript so you know exactly what to say across your website, emails, and sales materials.

1:1 Coaching for Solopreneurs

Through Content Direction, we work together to clarify your message and build a content rhythm you can actually sustain.

Consulting for Teams

Inside the Spotlight Strategy Program, I help your team install messaging, campaigns, and content systems so your marketing performs consistently.

Workshops and Events

If you’re looking to learn the framework and apply it quickly, I lead workshops that walk you through building your message step by step.

Whether I’m helping you untangle your homepage headline or guiding your team through a full campaign strategy, I’m not dropping in and disappearing.

I’m in it with you, helping you turn clarity into action.

Because clarity on its own doesn’t perform. You need execution too.

And just like an actor uses a script to know what to say on stage, you can use a BrandScript to know what to say in your marketing.

That’s what we create.

Should You Work with a StoryBrand Guide?

If your message feels fuzzy…

If your content takes forever to write…
If your website looks nice but doesn’t say much…

Then yes. This is where to start.

You need clearer messaging.
That’s what a StoryBrand Certified Guide helps you with.

How We Turn Your Message Into Marketing That Performs

The name changed. And then changed back. The whole idea behind it didn’t.

Since 2021, I’ve helped hundreds of clients clarify their message. I’ve trained over 50 Certified Coaches. I’ve facilitated StoryBrand’s live events. And I’ve built a business around helping people stop guessing and start showing up with confidence.

Clarity. Confidence. Connection.

That’s what coaching makes possible.
And if you’re ready for a message that does more than sound good—one that actually works—let’s talk.
